The Gift of My Upbringing: Presentation, Global Roots, and a Mother’s Wisdom
I was raised by a mother who taught me more than most kids ever learn. She taught me presentation — what to wear, how to carry myself, how to walk into a room and blend in with people of every background. That wasn’t vanity. That was survival. That was strategy. That was love.
Not many people get to go behind the scenes at the United Nations in New York at 17. Not many sit down with the worldwide postal chief and listen to how the world really connects. But I did.
My love for the United Nations started then, but the seeds were planted earlier — when my mother and her friend helped me develop Global Teen Club International. They didn’t just tell me to dream big. They showed me the world.
I’ve had opportunities most young people never experience. A school in Copenhagen, Denmark. Conversations with people of every race, every culture. I learned how to dress for the room, how to listen more than I speak, how to belong without losing myself.
Yes, I took French at Mt. Diablo High School — enough to say hello properly. I know enough Spanish to say Hola and make someone feel seen. I have enough common sense to translate messages from overseas and connect with people on a global capacity.
But none of that started with me. It started with my mother.
She taught me that the world is bigger than my zip code. That global awareness isn’t a class — it’s a calling. That reaching young people starts by being one.

I’m grateful. I’m grounded. And I carry those lessons with me in every room I enter now — whether it’s Toastmasters, a Ph.D. program, or a coffee shop in Keizer.
Because of her, I know how to show up. And because of her, I know why it matters.
