Beyond labels
On Being Seen in Full: Beyond Labels, Beyond One Version
I know what it’s like to be misunderstood. Some look at me and only see one version — maybe a diagnosis, maybe a moment of struggle. They don’t see the woman who’s won national awards. They don’t see the student who studied overseas. They don’t see the girl whose mother helped her grow into a global teen leader. They don’t see the rooms I’ve been in with U.S. presidents, or the opportunities I’ve been given that many never receive.
And yes, I’ve carried trauma. Real trauma. I’ve also seen how, in the world of mental health, symptoms can be misunderstood — sometimes even exaggerated by others who are hurting or seeking to be heard. That doesn’t make their pain less real. It means we need more compassion, not more judgment.
What people don’t see is the healing. The breaking free. The education that rewired my brain and rebuilt my life. Healing isn’t linear. It’s not a headline. It’s years of silent work that most will never witness.
So if you’ve only met one version of me, please know: I am more than a label. I am more than a bad day. I am a sum of every country I’ve lived in, every award I’ve earned, every tear my mother wiped, and every time I chose to rise after trauma tried to keep me down.
Education saved me. Truth set me free. And healing? Healing made me whole.
If you’re walking your own healing process — I see you. You’re not “too much.” You’re not “not enough.” You’re becoming.
And that matters.
