The UN
The United States is not just the United States. There is a part of this country that works on overseas issues, and that has always been the concept of the UN: nations reaching beyond themselves to do greater good.
I was just a 17 year old, shy, timid girl when I walked behind a door that many people never get access to. It was my mother's friend who opened that door for me. She introduced me to a man of class and dignity who looked at me and saw more than my surroundings. He showed me that I was not defined by my circumstances.
That moment taught me that where you start does not have to be where you finish. There are people and places in this world, even in the halls that deal with nations, who believe in the worth of one young girl. And that belief can change a life.
